Over population

POPULATION
Environmental scientist, Tim Flannery, says that Australia can only support a population of around 10 million people. We are currently 24 million and the population is rising quickly, especially with birth incentives from the government. Examples of these are government grants and the past treasurer encouraging the populate or perish approach.

Globally the population is around 6.5 billion people and Flannery says we can only sustain one billion people. In the meantime the forecast is for the population to keep climbing to about 9.5 billion people before the education of women will reach a level that the population will start to drop. As part of the energy crisis, many countries are turning to biofuels for oil production. This has caused riots as crops are more valuable for creating oil and feeding cars that it is for feeding people.

Professor Lovelock says that it all the arable land used for food production was used for biofuel production we couldn’t feed all the vehicles we currently have. ABC Science Show

India and China are finding that, as part of their aspirations to become more western, the amount of land required to feed each person is increasing. In India it is by a factor of 5 and in China it is by a factor of 4.
