Please tell me where I am wrong??

When asked about the planet's future, a dear friend of mind said that she dare not think about over population and climate change considering the age of her children and her hope for them to have a wonderful life. She commented that it is hard to think about excessive carbon dioxide levels, peak oil and climate change apart from the economic crisis when she looks into the eyes of her daughter.

Considering the daughter has inherited her mothers engulfing and charming smile, I agreed when I also looked into her eyes. On the other hand I am most concerned that the numbers just don't stack up.

What follows is a collection of comments gathered from conferences, scientists, documentaries and discussions with people who know this stuff. What I would like someone to do is tell me how the mess we are bringing on ourselves is going to sort itself out.

There are two points which concern me the most. The first one is that people keep asking which one is the most critical? It is NOT a competition!! They are all capable of individually making humanity obsolete and extinct. Secondly, if we are to survive as more than archaeological artifacts then we need to collectively work towards resolving the situation now. Personally, watching the news, listening to politicians and talking to the current and next generation I don't believe we will do it....

A POSSIBLE ANSWER
  • The immediate cessation of all military action around the world and related industries
  • Reduction of the world's  populationthrough negative growth policies
  • A radical rethink of economics where negative growth is a good thing
  • An acceptance that greed is not good, especially at the cost of the planet
  • Adopting of the  Millenniumgoals
  • The acceptance and implementation of the scientists warning to humanity
  • Increase education of the public in the reality of what is happening to the planet at all levels
Will this save the world? Probably not but it would slow the decline and give us time to do positive research that may lead to the breakthroughs.

Should we bother trying? If we want our children to survive, can we not try?

A FINAL INTRODUCTORY THOUGHT
It has been estimated that we have identified less than 5% of the life on this planet. How can we put in place a plan to control something of which we have such little understanding. David Suzuki
